Topic 26              Overview of Short Answers
There are only 4 types of questions that we will give ‘Yes / No’ answer.
A.  Verb-to-be    
            Am
            Is         Was      [S]  ------------------------?
            Are       Were

          Yes, [S] am / is / are / was / were.
          No, [S]  isn’t / aren’t / wasn’t / weren’t.       (am not = aren’t)

In Verb-to-be The Subject must always agree with the Verb in Person and Number.
‘No’  always goes with the word ‘not’.
          Am [I] tall?
          Yes, [you] are.     (No, [you] aren’t.)

          Is [Rose] lazy? 
          Yes, [she] is.  (No, [she] isn’t.)

          Are [you] willing to help?     
          Yes, [I] am.       (No, [I] am not (*aren’t))

           Yes, [S] do / does / did.
           No, [S] don’t / doesn’t / didn’t.

In the Simple Present Tense, ‘Do / Does’ must agree with the Subject in Person and in Number. 
In the Simple Past Tense, ‘Did’ is used regardless of the Subject in Person and in Number.

The Question patterns a) are the Simple Present Tense and the Simple Past Tense;  b) the Present Perfect Tense and the Past Perfect Tense. 
But the ‘Yes / No’ answer is the same.        

‘Have / Has’ must agree with the Subject in Person and in Number.  But ‘Had’ is used with any subject.

Like ‘Did’, ‘Had’ is used regardless of the Subject in Person and in Number.
The Simple Past Form of ‘have / has’ is ‘had’.

         Have [you] a scooter?
         Yes, [I] have.   (No, [I] haven’t.)

         Has [she] a new blouse? 
         Yes, [she] has.      (No, [she] hasn’t.)

         Had Ali a hamster last year?
         Yes, he had.       (No, he hadn’t.)

          Yes, he may.       (No, he shouldn’t.)

          Must [Nora] bring this cash register home?
          Yes, [she] must.        (No, [she] mustn’t.)  (No, she needn’t.)

          Must the children be very quiet in class?
          Yes, they must.         *(No, they needn’t.)         

          Ought [the children] to follow the leader to the jungle?
          Yes, [they] ought.     (No, [they] oughtn’t.)

Take note that the Modal Auxiliary Verbs just like ‘did / had’ are not affected by the Subject in Person and in Number.
