Topic 14 Adverbs
Adverbs are words that add more information
about manner, place, time, frequency, degree, etc to a verb, an adjective and
another adverb.
Adverbs of manner modify ----------- verb

Types of Adverbs
A)
Adverbs of Manner show us How an action is done.
He speaks politely.
How does he speak?
B)
Adverbs of Place tell us Where an action takes place.
James saw a wallet in
the park.
Where did James see a wallet?
C)
Adverbs of Time tell us When an action happens.
Tom celebrates his
birthday on 15 July every year.
When does Tom celebrate his
birthday every year?
D)
Adverbs of Frequency shows us How
Often an action takes place.
-------- always, never, often, usually, seldom, *sometimes
-------- once / twice a day / a week / a month / a year
-------- every day / week / month / year
Peter brushes his teeth
twice a day.
How often does Peter brush his
teeth?
Adverbs
of frequency like ‘always, never, often, usually, seldom, sometimes’ are placed
before Ordinary verb like ‘walk, work, clean, help and so on’ and after
verb-to-be ‘am / is /are /was /were’.
But ‘sometimes’ can also be placed at the beginning and at the end of
the sentence.
My father always drives carefully.
My father is always careful in his driving.
I am always happy to help my
parents.
I always help my parents
happily.
* Tina sometimes does her homework
at night .
Sometimes Tina does her
homework at night.
Tina does her homework at
night sometimes.

Adverbs of Degree tell us To What Extent an action is.
