Topic 8 Past Continuous Tense
We use the Past Continuous Tense to show an
action that was continuing in the past.
Verb Patterns
[S] was / were F2 ------------------------------------------------- (+)
[S] was / were not F2
------------------------------------------- (-)
Was / Were [S] F2
----------------------------------------------- (?)

The verb
pattern of the Present Continuous Tense is: [S] am /is /are F2.
The only
difference between these two tenses is the Verb-to-be:
‘am/ is’
-------- was;
are ---------- were.
Just
follow the rule of the Verb-to-be in the Simple Past Tense.
[You] were reading at home yesterday afternoon.
[You] were not sleeping at home yesterday afternoon.
Were
[you] drawing at home yesterday afternoon?
[Ali] was playing football at school last Friday afternoon.
[He] was not playing basketball at school last Friday
afternoon.
Was [he] playing badminton at school last Friday
afternoon?
[Ah Chong and I] were weeding the garden last Thursday morning.
[We] were not watching television last Thursday morning.
