Topic 11



Topic 11                  There be [ S ]  -----------------

We use this structure when we mention something for the first time.
(be =  is /are /was /were)
([S] = the subject)

           There is / was [Singular Subject]  ----------------------------------
           There are /were [Plural Subject]  -----------------------------------

The Singular subject is a singular noun with one in number or uncountable noun.  The Plural subject is a plural noun.

The subject decides whether we have to use a singular verb or plural  verb. A Singular Subject is followed by a Singular Verb ‘is / was’.  A Plural Subject is followed by a Plural Verb ‘are /were’.)

A Singular Subject takes a Singular Verb ‘is /was’ and a Plural Subject takes a Plural Verb ‘are /were’.

The time expressions decide whether we have to use Simple Present Tense or Simple Past Tense.

      Is /Are / Was / Were there [S]  ------------------------------  ( ? )

Always put ‘not’ after ‘is /are /was /were’ to form Negative Statements.)
(Always put ‘Is /Are /Was /Were’ before ‘there’ to form Questions / Interrogative.                        

       There  is [a computer] on the desk.  
        The computer is new.
        There are [many toys] in the box.
        The toys are lovely.
        There was [a watch] on the desk just now.
         The watch belongs to Jack.
         There were [many children] in the park yesterday evening.  
         The children were running and shouting loudly.
