Topic 22

Topic 22                Conditional Tenses (Unlikely Conditions)
In Conditional Tenses, we always use the Conjunction ‘if’.
A Conditional Sentence is made of two clauses:  the Main Clause and the Subordinate Clause.
In Gear One, we have learnt the Likely Conditions which shows an event that is likely to happen.

A)  Likely Conditions  ---------  (refer to Gear One for details)
     If [S] Simple Present Tense, [S] Simple Present Tense (F1 /F1 + s /es)
                                                    Simple Past Tense (F3)
                                                    Simple Future ([S] shall /will V)

B)  Unlikely Conditions
It is to show an event that is unlikely to take place or is contrary to the
     situation now.

       If [S] were -------------, [S] would V (root verb) -------------------.

If I were Alice, I would not go out at night.
(The fact is that Alice is not you, so she will still go out at night.)

If he were here, he would tell us what to do.
(The fact is that he is not here, so he will not tell us what to do.)

Always use ‘were’ in the ‘if-clause’ regardless of the Person and Number of the [Subject] for Verb-to-be and ‘would V (root verb)’ in the Main Clause.

     If [S] F3 ---------------, [S] would V (root verb) ----------------------.

In the ‘If-clause, always use the Simple Past Tense (F3) and ‘would  V’ in the Main Clause.

If she could, she would try her best to help.
(The fact is that she can’t, so she will not help at all.)

If you broke the vase, your mother would scold you.
(The fact is that you didn’t break it, so your mother will not scold you.)

If they made noise again, the teacher would cane them.
(The fact is that they are quiet now, so the teacher will not cane them.)
