Topic 9              Simple Future Tense & Be going to V

We use the Simple Future Tense to show an action in the future.  It is to show a Fact.  It is used with the future time expressions like:

            soon

            tomorrow /tomorrow morning / afternoon / evening  (tomorrow)

            next week /month / year / June / Saturday               (next)

            later

Verb Patterns

         [S] shall /will be F1 --------------------------------     (+)

         [S] shall /will not be /F1----------------------------     (-)

         Shall / Will [S] be / F1 ------------------------------     (?)

A)  Verb-to-be

         [I /We] shall be

         [You /You /He /She /It /They ] will be

‘I / We’ usually goes with ‘shall’ unless you want to emphasise your determination / will, then you may use ‘will’.  Otherwise it is always advisable to use accordingly.

B)  Ordinary Verb

         [I /We]   shall F1

         [You /You /He /She /It /They]  will F1

The modal verbs ‘shall /will’ are followed by the root verb/ F1.

          Peter will buy a calculator.

          Peter will not buy a computer.

          Will Peter buy a bicycle?

Be going to F1

We use this tense to show a planned action.

(Be = am /is /are)

Verb Patterns

     [S] am / is /are going to F ---------------------------------  (+)

     [S] am /is /are not going to F1  ----------------------------  ( - )

     Am /Is /Are [S] going to F1  --------------------------------  (?)

         Tina is going to Kuching next Friday.

         She is not going to Bintulu next Friday.

         Is she going to Miri next Friday?

         I am going to visit my grandparents this coming Sunday.       

         The children are not going to the zoo next week.
