Topic 6 Present Perfect
Tense
We use the Present Perfect Tense to show an
action we have done or not but it affects the situation now. It also shows an action that happens in the
past and continues up to the moment of speaking. It does not associate with the time
expression.

[Joe] has already written a letter. [He] is going to post it tomorrow.
[He] has not eaten his lunch yet. [He] is hungry now.
Has
[he] bought a telephone yet?
Yes, [he] has. (No,
[he] hasn’t.)
(The
tense often uses ‘already’ in the positive statement and ‘yet’ in the negative
statement and question.)
[The children] have picked all the rubbish. [It] is clean now.
[They] have not washed their hands yet.
Have [they] packed their school bags?
Yes, [they] have.
(No, [they] haven’t.)
[I] have not met Yalee for
a long time.
[Tina] has started her project since last Friday.
(The
tense also uses the Preposition ‘for’ to show a period of time and ‘since’ to
show a point of time when an action started.)
The
Subject must agree with the Verb (have / has) at all times.
